About

The world's largest folk festival takes over Munich's Theresienwiese for over two weeks, with vast beer tents, traditional Bavarian dress, brass bands and a giant funfair. The 191st Oktoberfest runs from late September into early October.

Highlights

  • 14 large beer tents plus a sprawling traditional funfair
  • Opening 'O'zapft is!' keg-tapping and the costume-and-riflemen's parade
  • Lederhosen, Dirndl and Bavarian brass-band atmosphere

Practical tips

  • About 1.5 h from Salzburg by train — an easy day or overnight trip
  • Reserve a tent table months ahead, or arrive before midday for a walk-in seat
  • Weekday mornings are far calmer than weekend evenings
